Curavisc

Osteoarthritis Treatment with Curavisc®

In an osteoarthritis, there is a qualitative and quantitative deficiency of natural hyaluronic acid in the affected joint (e.g., the knee joint), which normally provides the necessary lubrication of the joint. In these cases the physician can use Curavisc®, a hyaluronic acid produced by a fermentation process, to supplement the synovial fluid. This process is called viscosupplementation, that is, the supplementation of synovial fluid.

Using a syringe, the active substance is injected directly into the joint space (intra–articular injection).

This makes it possible — with correct diagnosis and correctly applied therapy —, to attain increased mobility and pain relief in the earlier stages of the osteoarthritis. This can contribute to an enhanced quality of life for the patient. Patients are frequently free of pain for an extended period (up to 12 months) or they require markedly less pain medication. Adverse effects on Gastrointestinal and cardiovascular system are not known.

A Curavisc® course of treatment is generally comprised of five injections which are administered at one week intervals.
